I have a 1000W ballast. Can I use a 400W or 600W lamp (bulb) in it?

As a general rule, lamps (bulbs) can only be used with ballasts that specify the same wattage rating. A 1000W lamp can only be used with a 1000W ballast, a 400W with a 400W, etc. Many ballasts are made to handle only one wattage level. An exception to this would be the Xtrasun Variable Watt ballasts (XTEDW-), which have various settings for output power and are meant to be used with a lamp of the same wattage as the dial setting (for example, use a 600W bulb when the ballast is set to 600W, etc.).

Can an HPS ballast be used to power a metal halide lamp?

This is never recommended. The ballast and lamp (bulb) type (wattage and HID lamp type) must match. Convertible ballasts, however, can be switched between MH and HPS modes. There is also the option of using a conversion lamp. These are lamps that are designed to produce a MH spectrum while run on an HPS ballast, or vice versa. Phantom digital ballasts can ignite HPS or MH bulbs, except for the 750W model, which is meant only for HPS.

Why is my Sunburst system making a loud noise when the toggle switch is in the "None" position?

The "None" position simply indicates that the system is operating in neither HPS nor MH mode. This light system should NEVER be plugged in or receive power when the toggle switch is in the "None" position. Doing so may cause damage to the operation of the light system.
